OPTOMETRY
Dr. Burley is a graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago (ICO), where he graduated as an honor student. Admission requirements are very stringent at ICO, the largest and oldest optometry college in the world.
In 1992, the scope of practice of optometry in Ohio was broadened to include Treatment and Management of Ocular Diseases (TMOD) for those optometrists who obtained additional education and passed the national TMOD board exam. Dr. Burley was among the first group of optometrists to achieve this certification. He practices complete primary eye care, including treatment of eye injuries and diseases.
Dr. Burley has served as president of the Lorain County Optometric Society.
AUDIOLOGY
Dr. Burley studied Electrical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, then transferred to Kent State University, where he completed his bachelor's degree in Biology, a second bachelor's degree in Speech and Hearing Science, and the master's degree in Audiology.
Dr. Burley served clinical fellowships in audiology at South Texas Speech, Hearing and Language Center in Corpus Christi, and at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham.
Dr. Burley is certified by the Ohio State Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology, and earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). He is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology
PERSONAL
Dr. Burley represents the third generation of health care providers in his family. His great Uncle, Dr. Sam Burley, practiced in Lorain at the corner of 5th and Broadway for many years. Dr. Sam was one of the first medical specialists in Lorain. Dr. George Burley (Dr. Mike's father) took over Sam's practice in the early 1950's. In 1982, Dr. Mike joined his father George in the practice of optometry.
Dr. Burley is a long-term resident of Vermilion, and a graduate of Vermilion High School, where he was senior class president.
Dr. Burley has served on the board of directors of the Lucy Idol Center, the Vermilion Family YMCA, and the Vermilion Rotary Club, where he has served as Rotary Club President. He lives in Vermilion and enjoys boating, skiing, scuba diving, and camping.
